Hi,
My husband and I are hosting a combination Cinco de Mayo/Kentucky Derby party, and I want to feature foods from both Kentucky and Mexico. Can anyone suggest a good, authentic cookbook for Mexican cuisine and/or for Kentucky/Southern cuisine? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Authenticity is of major importance.

Thanks,
K.

Anything by Rick Bayless or Diana Kennedy will cover the authentic Mexican part of it.

I think that David Rosengarten wrote about how to make a proper mint julep in The Rosengarten Report some time ago... I'll search my back issues and let you know if I find anything.

I haven't located the Rosengarten article (I'll keep looking), but I did come across the May 2003 issue of Bon Appetit on Mexico. So I'd suggest a trip to epicurious.com to see what's there.

Rick Bayless is one of the best Mexican cookbook authors.

Once you've found titles, I suggest you use AbeBooks.COM to find them inexpensively. I've been using that site for a while now to increase the number of older cookbooks I own, without breaking the bank.

Just a satisfied foodie...

Thanks very much. I picked up Rick Bayless' Mexico One Plate at a Time. Looks great so far. I'll keep my eye out for the suggested mint julep recipe too. I did manage to find a Kentucky cookbook- Kentucky's Best: Fifty Years of Great Recipes by Linda Allison-Lewis. Haven't tried anything from it yet, but it looks ok so far.

I've used AbeBooks too- they're great with their shipping, and their prices are always good.

Anyway, thanks again!

Diana Kennedy is from my point of view an authority on the subject. One that is very highly regarded among the mexican cooks as well. Nobody else I know of has devoted him/herself to such a deep understanding of Mexican cooking.

Have a great celebration!
