My recent trip to Santa Barbara was actually inspired by a great new wine movie I saw at a sneak screening called "Bottle Shock". It's all about California's Napa Valley and their rise to international wine acclaim in 1970s. It stars Alan Rickman and Bill Pullman. Like Sideways, it was really funny and will be sure to increase business for the wine community, which doesn't hurt either ;). I highly recommend the film! It comes out next week. You can see the trailer at bottleshockthemovie.com if you don't know what I'm talking about...
I was inspired after I saw the film to travel to some California wineries. I didn't get as far North as Napa Valley (where they filmed the movie), but I was able to get to the Santa Barbara area. Visited the Hitching Post, Sun Stone, Kalyra and a few others. Definitely check these out if you get to the area! Especially Sun Stone!

Rented the movie on Sunday, I greatly enjoyed the movie, well worth my time. :)
My husband and I travel south and spend time in Napa and Sonoma and have lots of fun wine tasting in the area. :D Our favorites, William Harrison, Imagary, Arrowood, and Frank Family.
We are from Washington State, where wine has become a very big business, and the quality is everybit as good as what we taste in California. Our fav's are Woodhouse Family Cellars, Brian Carter Cellars, Mark Ryan, Cougar Crest, Ash Hollow, and so many more.

The California coast line from Paso Robles (which is inland, but not too far from the coast) all the way to Santa Barbara has some excellent wineries.
Of course, Napa-Sonoma is just a wonderful place to get lost for a few days. It's one of the areas I miss the most, but I have a lot of great memories ... not to mention several bottles of very good wine! If you get a chance, try Peju Province Winery in Napa and ask Alan to Yodel for you!

Having lived in SB for nearly 20 years, I can attest to the great quality of wine from the area. The growth in quality producers has been monumental. If anyone needs recommendations, just shout!
